About

The Boston New Music Initiative, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining an international network of composers, performers, conductors, directors, and champions of music in order to generate new music concerts, compositions, collaborations, and commissions. Incorporated in 2010, the organization aims to advance the careers of its members in the field of new music by serving as a resource for networking, commissioning, collaboration, and programming.

History and Activities

The idea behind BNMI began in the summer of 2009 in response to our belief that the market for new classical art music has been growing, yet the opportunity to perform such music has been relatively limited. The organization was formed by alumni from the University of Massachusetts and the University of Iowa to establish an international network that promotes the creation and performance of new music by providing various opportunities for musicians and composers. After an almost-overwhelming response to our first Call for Scores in December 2009, we held our inaugural concert in February of 2010, which was a tremendous success and was followed by equally successful concerts in April and June. The organization was incorporated and granted 501(c)(3) non-profit status by the Internal Revenue Service in April 2010.

Our second season, which opened in September 2010, expanded to a six-concert series under the theme of “100 Years of ‘New Music.’” In addition to performing works selected from our Calls for Scores, we have also incorporated masterworks into our repertoire, including Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, Samuel Barber’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, and Arvo Pärt’s Fratres. Instrumentation on our concerts has ranged from solo works through works for chamber orchestra, as well as electroacoustic, multimedia, and choral pieces.

The Boston New Music Initiative Concert Series

In keeping with the organization’s mission, the Boston New Music Initiative hosts a series of concerts each season. Composers are invited to submit their works for consideration throughout the concert season through our Calls for Scores. Works selected by a rotating panel of judges (all qualified experts in the field of music) are performed by individual members performers and ensembles-in-residence during the concert season.

Composers interested in submitting their work for consideration can find our Calls for Scores announced on our own website throughout the concert season. Individual performers, ensembles, and conductors are invited to audition for consideration on the concert series. All participants on our concert series must be or become members of the organization prior to participation (membership is free). Click here for membership information.
